Cala Sottile in Monopoli
Cala Sottile is a hidden cove in Monopoli, ideal for those seeking relaxation and authenticity.
I stayed at a B&B in Monopoli's center. It took a few tries to find because tourists flood the city, especially in high season. But it turned out to be very convenient. The sea is close, so you don't really need a car to get there.
However, the small public beaches in the city are always crowded, both in low and high season. The equipped beaches are quite pricey. So, I ended up doing what many do: taking the car and moving a bit. But then parking becomes the real issue, especially during busy hours. About 5 km away is Cala Sottile, a good alternative, even closer than Cala Tre Buchi.
Cala Sottile is a sandy strip between two cliffs. It's surrounded by greenery, about 5 km from Monopoli. It's a bit like Cala Verde. The beach has fine, light sand. The water is usually clean, calm, and clear. It's great for swimming or a bit of snorkeling. The area is cozy and pleasant, but it can get crowded on holidays. The nearby Santo Stefano campsite means it's rarely isolated, though weekdays are more manageable.
To get there, park near the campsite in a free parking area. Then walk. It's a dirt path, about 500 meters, with some gentle slopes. From above, there's a nice view of the cove. Once there, remember the beach is free and has no services. Bring everything you need.
The benefit isn't just the peace. You don't pay to enter. In high season at Monopoli, two people can easily spend 50 euros for a lido. To enjoy the beach fully, pick your time wisely. Early morning or late afternoon is best. It gets crowded in the middle of the day.
Besides saving money, I like Cala Sottile for another reason: the sandy bottom. You can walk in the water without water shoes, which I find annoying.
When I go, I remember the 500-meter walk from the parking. So, I avoid bringing too much. I often skip the umbrella and use the natural shade from the pine trees by the cove. It's more than enough.
