Monopoli and Its Harbor
Monopoli, with its harbor, is a gem of Puglia, perfect for romantic moments and unforgettable walks.
If you're looking for a port with big ships, ferries, and urban hustle, go to Bari. Monopoli's little port is different: small, cozy, almost intimate. Fishermen's boats, white stone arches, and clear water. It's the kind of place where you sit on a wall and feel no need to do anything else.
The evening is when it's best
During the day, the little port is nice, but in the evening, it transforms. From sunset on, it fills with people strolling aimlessly: some with a glass of wine, some stopping to listen to music, others just there to be. It's not nightlife, no big venues or special attractions: just the port, changing light, and people relaxing. For many, it's the best part of a day in Monopoli.
You can swim during the day
It's a practical perk few expect: the little port is swimmable. It's not a serviced beach, but in summer, people dive right off the rocks and side areas. The water is often clear, especially on calm mornings. If you want sand, nearby coves like Cala Porta Vecchia are within walking distance. Adjacent coves like Porto Bianco and Porto Rosso are also loved for swimming by both locals and tourists. Lots of tourists.
The parking problem -- and how to solve it
It's the only real issue. In high season, the historic center's streets are ZTL (limited traffic zone), and nearby parking spots fill up quickly. It's smart to know where to park beforehand.
There are some free options:
Ex Cementeria (Via Andrea Mantegna): free parking 24/7, just minutes from the historic center. It's the easiest option if you want to reach the port easily.
Park & Ride Via Pisonio / Via Nievo: open from April through summer. Park your car and take a free shuttle to the center. It's especially convenient on busy weekends.
The train is still the recommended choice: Monopoli station is about 10-15 minutes on foot from the port. Personally, I prefer it. Regional trains are great. They're cheap and always full of young people from all over. The journey is pleasant.
Is it worth it?
Yes, especially if you're not expecting a show but a place to be. In the evening, the port slowly fills up: people strolling leisurely, some sitting on the wall with a drink, music softly playing from nearby places. It's all very harmonious.
It's a romantic spot. It naturally has a scenic charm that invites real relaxation: the sea at night, still boats, lights from the places reflecting on the water. If you're looking for a romantic evening, the port is probably the right place -- and it won't cost you anything to sit there and watch.
