For an evening in Monopoli as a couple, expect a long walk, outdoor venues, and a lively historic center in the warm season.
If you arrive late afternoon, start at the Porto Vecchio because the walk around the port area is longer. At that time, the sunset lights up the fishermen's blue boats and the walls.
From here, continue to the Castello di Carlo V, then enter the white alleys of the historic center until you reach Piazza Garibaldi. It's an ideal route because the evening isn't focused in just one spot.
The evening in Monopoli: aperitif, dinner, and walk
For the aperitif, choose one of the sea-view terraces in the historic center, overlooking the ancient walls or near Porta Vecchia.
For dinner, it's better to stay near the port to enjoy some cool air. The city is beautiful in summer, but the heat can be intense.
During this season, I recommend booking the restaurant well in advance: Monopoli is a tourist spot and very crowded throughout the week.
Off-season, things are different. But always book on weekends.
The difference with Polignano.
Polignano overlooks the sea with cliffs and famous coves like Lama Monachile.
In Monopoli, the port area walk is longer and less dramatic. But it's perfect for extending the evening wandering through the center's alleys.
The walk from Porto Vecchio to Piazza Garibaldi, through Monopoli's historic center alleys, is 300-350 meters. It usually takes 4-5 minutes, but summer crowds double that time.
On those nights, the city feels like a big tourist village. Behind every alley, you might find a bar, terrace, or cozy spot.
Personally, for a first romantic date, I'd choose Polignano for its dramatic scenery. For a seasoned couple, I'd suggest Monopoli, where you can enjoy a longer evening with a walk, aperitif, and dinner, without focusing on just one view.
Monopoli and Polignano share one thing: it's better to reach them by train. Driving and worrying about parking can spoil the carefree strolls that make evenings in both cities enjoyable.
The first time I arrived by car I drove around for 30 minutes before finding a spot, ending up parking far from the center.
