Finding really cheap accommodation in Monopoli isn't easy. The city has become one of Puglia's most popular spots, especially in summer. People visit the historic center and enjoy the beaches and nightlife.

To save money, avoid July and August. Choose months like May, June, September, or the off-season. Still, Monopoli is busy most of the year. Even in quieter months, prices are higher than nearby places.
Also, decide if you just want to visit Monopoli or spend a summer vacation there. If you want to visit, you can stay in another city. But if you want to enjoy the beaches by day and the historic center by night, daily travel might be less convenient.
Alternatives I would consider
The simplest solution for visiting Monopoli without staying there is probably sleeping in Bari. The city offers a wider range of hotels, apartments, B&Bs, and hostels, with options for different budgets.
Bari and Monopoli are connected by many regional trains. The trip takes about half an hour and costs just a few euros. That's why many travelers use Bari as a base to visit Monopoli for a day.
This option is less ideal for those wanting to stay in Monopoli late or visit beaches outside the city daily. In these cases, you need to check the last train times and any extra travel from the station.
A closer and much cheaper alternative is Conversano. Buses from the Ferrovie del Sud Est also connect to Monopoli. Some direct rides cost less than 2 euros and take about 30 minutes.
The issue is these fast rides aren't available regularly all day. Before booking a place in Conversano, check the bus schedules for both going and returning, especially in the evening, on weekends, and in different seasons.
In my opinion, Bari is the most practical choice for those traveling without a car and mainly wanting to visit Monopoli. Conversano can save more money but needs careful planning for travel.
If you want to fully enjoy Monopoli's summer, spending days at the beach and evenings in the historic center, consider staying directly in the city. To save money, look for a place outside the old town, where accommodations are cheaper.
Monopoli is small: if you choose the right area, you can walk to the historic center and have some city beaches nearby. The beaches along the southern coast, however, might need extra travel.
