Marco e Rosa Refuge: sleeping at 3,600 meters on the Bernina

The Rifugio Marco e Rosa De Marchi - Agostino Rocca is located about 3,600 meters high. It's the highest support point on the Italian side of the Bernina group. For many climbers, it's a crucial stop before ascending Pizzo Bernina. It lets them split the climb and spend the night deep in the high mountains.
But let's be clear: reaching it isn't a regular mountain hike. It requires training, experience, and proper gear. At these heights, sudden weather changes can make the path very difficult. So, it's important to study it well. Especially for large groups, having people with strong climbing skills is key.

The refuge is a strategic spot for those tackling Pizzo Bernina. Because of its role and the limited facilities at this altitude, it's very popular. So, it's wise to book well in advance.
During my stay, I found a very warm welcome and good food. These are especially nice after a busy day at high altitude. But there are some things you should know before arriving.
The bathroom facilities are quite limited: there are few toilets and only two sinks. In the morning, when guests gather in the limited spaces, especially around the 5 AM breakfast, this becomes a problem.
The space for boots and gear is also limited. When the refuge is full, it's hard to find a spot to dry clothes or wet gear. You need to consider these things given the location: running a refuge at 3,600 meters has very different constraints compared to a valley structure.
