Cervinia with the dog in summer: lifts, snow in August, and lunch at 3,458 meters
In Breuil-Cervinia, dogs can use the lifts for free, with a leash and muzzle. In summer, you can reach Plateau Rosà, where there is still snow at the end of August, and the Rifugio Guide del Cervino welcomes pets.
In Breuil-Cervinia and Valtournenche, dogs are allowed on lifts. They can ride for free if leashed and muzzled.
As you ascend, you'll see glacial lakes and snowy slopes. Once off the lifts, it's almost all white, with skiers even in summer.
The air is cold as soon as you leave the cable car. You immediately feel the contrast with the warm valley below. Dogs react quickly: they sniff the snow or run on it like it's winter.
Keep in mind, at Plateau Rosà, you're almost 3500 meters high. The sudden pressure change and cold can tire your pet. Especially if it's not used to high altitudes. So, avoid too much exertion right away. Let your dog gradually adapt to the environment.
If you prefer staying lower, there are easy hikes in Valle d'Aosta with your dog.
In Breuil-Cervinia, dogs can go to the Rifugio Guide del Cervino. We stopped there for lunch. The menu offers various local dishes, and the staff is friendly and quick. I ordered polenta with stew, a beer, water, and an Americano coffee, spending about 30 euros. Unfortunately, the restrooms weren't working that day 😑.
It's worth going up just to see your dog run on the snow in summer. Bring at least 1 liter of water per person and about 1 liter for your dog. A blanket or towel can be handy too. It helps your dog lie on the snow without getting too cold. July and August are usually the best months to visit Plateau Rosà. The temperatures are more manageable, and there are more daylight hours.
In Breuil-Cervinia, parking is quite convenient and close to the cable cars.
