Apricena in a few hours: itinerary between the village and Castel Pagano
Clock Tower, Palazzo Baronale, medieval traces and views of the Gargano between history, nature and bike excursions
You only need a few hours to visit Apricena. The historic center is small and easy to explore on foot. The main sights are the Clock Tower and the Baronial Palace. If you have more time, visit Castel Pagano outside the town. It's great for those wanting to explore the Gargano inland by mountain bike.
Apricena is about ten kilometers from Lesina. The historic center is in a limited traffic zone (ZTL), so you visit it on foot.
One of its symbols is the Clock Tower, the old bell tower of San Martino church, destroyed by the 1627 earthquake.
The main monument is the Baronial Palace, which dominates the town's main square. It's perfect for a souvenir photo. With its local white stone facade, it represents the town's historic heart. The fortress is still privately owned, so it's not open to visitors.
The best time to visit is from April to June and from September to October. This way, you avoid the summer's high temperatures.
Castel Pagano by mountain bike from Apricena
Outside the town, the most interesting spot is Castel Pagano. If you're on the Adriatic Cycle Route, you can bike from the town to the castle.

Bring water and a snack. You won't find any food stops on the way or near the archaeological site. The hike can be tough: the direct route has about 237 meters of elevation gain, while longer mountain bike routes can exceed 550-770 meters total. The path is partly unpaved, so you'll need a mountain bike, good fitness, and time.
Today, only a few ruins of the ancient castle remain. You can access them freely, with no entry fee or visiting hours.
The ruins, set in natural scenery, make Castel Pagano a charming place. The effort of biking is rewarded by a spectacular view over the Gargano, the Molise mountains, and the Tavoliere hills.
For those traveling the Adriatic Cycle Route between Lesina and Manfredonia, Apricena is a possible stop along the way.
Castel Pagano is an extra destination for those wanting to explore more of the Gargano inland.
