Alicudi: where to sleep, eat, and how many days to stay

Most tourists visit Alicudi for just a day. They often take a boat trip, leaving only a few hours to explore. I did the same, but realized staying a night changes everything. When the last day visitors leave, only a few people remain. No cars, just the sea and walking.

If you stay overnight, know what to expect. There are few accommodations on Alicudi. They're mostly in the south, near the port and the only village. No roads for cars exist. From the port, you walk up stairs and paths. These paths can take you to Filo dell'Arpa. If your place is higher up, consider luggage transport before leaving.

The same goes for dining. There are very few places to eat on the island. The options aren't like other tourist spots in the Aeolian Islands. But this scarcity is part of the charm. I ate freshly caught and fried fish, like squid, mullet, and mackerel. I also tasted artisan ricotta made by local farmers. Instead of seeking variety, adapt to what Alicudi offers that day.

How long to stay in Alicudi and what to know before going

A day might be enough to understand Alicudi. But to truly experience its pace, stay one or two nights. It's not about more attractions. It's about having time to walk the trails leisurely, swim, climb to higher homes, and see what happens when visitor boats leave.

In the evening, don't expect much in the usual sense. You don't come to Alicudi for bars, shopping, or nightlife. That's what makes life on Alicudi unique. It's an island without cars. Distances and days follow a different rhythm than busy tourist spots.

The port and few activities are the main hub, while the rest of the island rises up and is only reachable on foot.

So, it's best to come prepared. Bring what you'll need during your stay, especially personal items that might be hard to find on the island. Comfortable shoes and light luggage are crucial here, because moving around often means climbing steps and hills.

Also, consider the ferry connections. Spending a few days on Alicudi means accepting that schedules, departures, and arrivals depend on the sea conditions. It's not the best place if you need a tightly planned schedule or must leave on time.

Alicudi suits those who want a few days with little to do and plenty of time to do it. Not having a car, choosing from few dining spots, and making do with what's available might seem limiting. These are the things that make staying overnight different from a day visit.

I left the same day. In hindsight, I probably should have stayed at least one more day. Not to see something I missed, but to experience Alicudi when almost everyone else had left.
