Unmissable breathtaking views of Cervinia
Explore the unmissable breathtaking views of Cervinia.
There are several spots to admire Cervinia and the Matterhorn. When summarizing, something is always left out. But I know tourists have to choose and want the main sights. So, I'll list the key spots, in my opinion.
The Lago Blu is Cervinia's most photographed and romantic spot. Just check Instagram. It's a small alpine lake with intense turquoise color. It perfectly reflects the Matterhorn, creating a living postcard. How to get there: From Breuil-Cervinia's center (2050 m), it's about a 20-30 minute walk along trail 107. It's easy, flat, well-marked, and suitable for everyone, including kids. Alternatively, drive there (free parking near the lake). It's a short distance: about 1.5 km round trip.Beautiful in all seasons: in summer for green meadows and flowers; in autumn for the golden larch foliage; in winter for snow and fairy-tale silence (though the lake often freezes). I prefer autumn. I've been there and had lunch at the nearby Alpage restaurant. Sorry for always talking about food. But the venison stew with polenta was simply exceptional, tender and perfectly flavorful. Prices are fair, and the atmosphere is welcoming, letting you truly breathe mountain air. The location deserves a mention too: well-detailed, with a pleasant view and energy.
Plan Maison (2,550 m) is the perfect mid-level balcony to admire the Matterhorn up close. You get a close view of the south face and Cervinia basin. It's an easily accessible panoramic area, with meadows in summer and snow in winter, suitable for families.
How to get there: From the cable car station in Breuil-Cervinia's center, frequent departures take about ten minutes. Alternatively, you can walk to Plan Maison via a trail. But this route takes longer, about one or two hours. It's mentioned just for completeness.
From here, several hiking trails let you explore the area's nature and views in summer. The environment is calm and relaxing. Along the trails, you can see edelweiss in its natural habitat. Remember, it's a protected species.
The Plateau Rosà (3,480 m) is one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the Alps. Here, the high altitude is truly felt: thin air, deep silence, and a breathtaking 360-degree view. The Matterhorn seems so close, almost within reach, while the glacier stretches out impressively. On clear days, you can see from Monte Rosa to Mont Blanc, from Gran Paradiso to the Swiss peaks, even spotting Monviso.
You can only reach Plateau Rosà by lift, with a cable car from Cervinia that includes several stops. The whole trip takes about 30-45 minutes. Walking access is only possible through long glacier routes, meant for experienced climbers.
Visiting this place offers a high mountain experience, even for non-climbers. Besides the views, there's the Rifugio Guide del Cervino, perfect for a lunch break at altitude. You can also visit the "Una Montagna di Lavoro" museum, the highest in Europe, and explore an ice cave with a guide. In summer, you can watch glacier skiing, while in winter, the area becomes a hub for international alpine skiing. In summer, it's an ideal spot for those seeking a cool, scenic, and unique place, feeling like you're naturally crossing the Italy-Switzerland border.
