Ovindoli Monte Magnola: the affordable skiing you wouldn't expect

I often travel to Valle d'Aosta for work. Every time, I try to find some hours to ski. We're talking about some of the most beautiful places in Italy. They have modern facilities, spectacular views, and vast ski areas.

It's hard to criticize anything, except one thing: the costs.

Between lift tickets, rentals, and maybe lunch in a lodge, expenses add up fast. In many cases, costs can easily double compared to less known places.

And that's where Abruzzo comes in.

In recent years, I've spent some relaxing weekends in Collarmele, just minutes by car from Ovindoli Monte Magnola. I've often skied there and noticed a big difference, especially in price, but not only that.

A daily adult lift ticket in high season is around 44-46 euros. At the end of the season, it drops to about 33 euros. Equipment rental also stays affordable, around 40 euros for a full day.

When you compare these numbers to Valle d'Aosta, you quickly see how much you can save, especially if skiing with family.

Yet, once you're on the skis, the experience feels less different than you might expect.

The slopes at Ovindoli run through woods and open areas, offering views that don't feel like a "lesser" place. It doesn't have the size of large Alpine resorts, that's clear, but it has its own charm.

The Ovindoli Monte Magnola area offers about 21 slopes, totaling between 21 and 30 km. They're suitable for all levels, from blue to black runs. There are 11 lifts covering the area well, with a snowmaking system that helps maintain the slopes during the season.

But there's one thing big Alpine resorts excel in: skiing for days without repeating a run. If you're planning a ski week and have some experience, this variety can really matter.

However, in Ovindoli, I noticed skiing is more relaxed.

There's less crowding, fewer lift lines, and less pressure to "rush" to make the most of your ski pass. You enjoy the day more, even just by stopping to admire the scenery.

Another thing that makes a difference is the overall setting.

In Abruzzo, at least for now, prices are more affordable for everything: lodging, restaurants, services. This allows you to plan more snow days without needing meticulous planning.

It's not about saying one is better than the other.

The Aosta Valley is still a go-to for those seeking large resorts and top-notch facilities. But Abruzzo, especially Ovindoli, offers a real alternative for skiing well without spending twice as much.

In the end, for what you truly seek on a snow day -- skiing, being outdoors, enjoying the view -- the difference is much less than you might think.

It's one of those cases where the quality-price ratio favors a destination that might not be as famous but still has a lot to offer.

Collarmele is an ideal base for this. From here, you can reach Ovindoli in minutes, and other towns worth visiting. One standout is Aielli, which is close by and has a unique vibe, with murals transforming the village and the Torre delle Stelle adding a distinctive touch.
