Ovindoli in winter: postcard-worthy historic center
In Ovindoli, people go to ski, but in winter, you also discover other things: affordable prices, slower rhythms, and a Christmas historic center that looks like a postcard.
Ovindoli is always a great place to visit, both in summer and winter. But in winter, it has a special charm. I mainly came here to ski. It's one of those places you choose for snow and a hassle-free day outdoors. Plus, it's cheaper than more famous spots.
The costs are much more affordable. The ski pass and rentals are priced so you can enjoy a day on the snow without feeling like you're constantly spending. It's a place where you can ski more freely, without worrying about expenses, and that really changes the experience.
And that's how the day started, on skis, through forest trails and open spaces with mountain views. You ski well here, with fewer lines and a calmer pace than busier resorts.
But the most striking part came later.
At the end of the day, I headed to the town center, not expecting much. It was Christmas time, and the atmosphere was completely different.
The lights, decorations, and narrow streets of the historic center had a cozy, almost silent feel. There was no chaos, just that typical small-town holiday vibe.
Wandering aimlessly, I found myself slowing down. It wasn't about skiing anymore, but a different, more peaceful moment.
At one point, I stopped to eat at a Trattoria Abruzzese. I had local grilled sausages, delicious, for just 9 euros. We discovered this little gem in the heart of Ovindoli. The place was recently renovated, warm, and welcoming, keeping the authenticity of a local trattoria. The appetizer of cured meats and cheeses was also excellent. Here, too, you find the day's theme: simple things, done well, without crazy prices.
It's one of those contrasts that works: morning on the snow, afternoon in the village streets.
Ovindoli isn't just a ski resort. It also has a simpler, almost hidden side that shows up at certain times of the year.
Maybe that's what makes it interesting: you don't have to choose between doing something or relaxing. Both coexist naturally.
Personally, to explore these places in Abruzzo, I choose Collarmele as my base. It's just a few kilometers from Ovindoli and Aielli, and it really feels like being in a familiar environment. It's the kind of stay that doesn't tire you out. In fact, it's a simple but truly refreshing break.
