Ostuni: The Enchanting White City
Ostuni, the White City, is one of the most beloved destinations of summer 2023, featuring historical attractions, architectural beauty, and a growing tourism economy.
Ostuni, known as the "White City," shines when you explore on foot. The whitewashed alleys twist through climbs and stairs, offering different views. You see panoramic terraces and sudden glimpses of the Puglian countryside. The historic center is a maze of narrow streets, old churches, and small details showing local life. From the Cathedral, at the city's highest point, you can see the Adriatic Sea. This view alone makes the visit worthwhile. You can see the sea in the morning, of course. But in the evening, the view over the olive plain is beautiful and romantic.
The cathedral area looks like this:
Ostuni also has a public park, a well-organized garden area. They often hold events there. Here's how it looks on a typical day:
Besides its charm, the city has significant economic importance. Tourism is crucial for Ostuni and the surrounding area, boosting the local economy. The data confirms this: a recent report places Ostuni 52nd among Italian tourist destinations for economic impact. It adds about 295 million euros in value. These numbers show that the area's beauty isn't just for admiration. It's also a key driver for local development.
It offers something for everyone, even the true luxury traveler.
But if you want some nightlife without spending too much, this city has a lot to offer. For an aperitif, I recommend one of the most iconic, Instagram-worthy spots: Borgo Antico.
Here are some practical tips you won't get from postcard photos of Ostuni, which often only show the pretty corners.
Getting around is easy if you go at the right pace. The historic center mostly has traffic restrictions. During busy times, driving through narrow streets is frustrating. It's best to park outside or in peripheral areas and walk.
Once parked, you'll see the town is made for walking. Distances are short, and walking lets you explore alleys, enjoy views, visit churches, and find hidden spots. In summer, shuttles and public transport connect parking areas to the center. It's a stress-free way to avoid traffic.
Seeing Ostuni isn't just about the center. There are lesser-known but beautiful places I recommend, especially for a peaceful time with your partner. For example, Villa Specchia. I visited to see the church and park. I heard a wonderful mass by Father Maurizio and enjoyed the view afterward. Fantastic.
