Meal Times in Bari
In Bari, people eat late, especially in the evening, with meal times reflecting Mediterranean culture.
In Bari, people eat late. But for visitors, it's often better to eat earlier. Bari has become more touristy in recent years. Especially on weekends and in summer, finding a table after 9 PM can be tough. This is true in Bari Vecchia and along the seafront. Eating around 8 PM, though early for locals, often means a more relaxed evening. You can avoid lines at trattorias and long waits.
Lunch: between 1 PM and 2:30 PM
Lunchtime is still quite traditional. This is especially true in residential areas and places frequented by workers and families. After 2:30 PM, some delis close, and small places shut down until late afternoon. It's common to find shops and bakeries closed between 3 PM and 5 PM, especially outside the tourist center.
If you're hungry in the afternoon, the simplest solution is focaccia.
Bari focaccia has no set time
It's the only food in Bari that ignores meal times. You can eat it for breakfast, lunch, as an afternoon snack, or while strolling the seafront late at night. Enter a focacceria around 11:30 AM, and you'll see students grabbing a quick piece, tourists just out of the station, and some still having breakfast. In the afternoon, lines form outside historic bakeries on weekends.
For visitors, it's practical too: you can eat well without worrying about kitchen hours.
The aperitivo: more relaxed than elsewhere
If you're from Milan or cities where aperitivo is a big deal, Bari might feel different. Aperitivo is there, especially on the seafront or in the center, but it's slower-paced. At 7 PM, many places are still half-empty. People take their time, especially in summer when it cools down only in the evening. There's no big apericena trend: often, you just sit to drink something and enjoy the sea view.
Dinner starts late, even later in summer
In Bari Vecchia, trattorias fill up after 8:30 PM. Before that, tables are easy to find, which isn't the case later. In summer, especially on weekends near the sea, dinner can easily start at 9:30 PM.
For foreign tourists, this is a big adjustment: in many European cities, dinner is normal by 6:30 PM. In Bari, at that time, outside touristy areas, kitchens might not be open. If you head out early and find the center oddly empty, you didn't pick the wrong spot--you just picked the wrong time.
