Guide to the Saint Léger Crypt in Aosta Valley
Explore the Saint Léger Crypt, a medieval gem in the Aosta Valley.
We left Aosta for a weekend trek. In about 20 minutes, we reached Aymavilles by car. Our goal was to hike the 8D trail from Aymavilles to Ozein village. It's a doable route, around 10 km long. We stumbled upon it without detailed plans, but it turned out more interesting than expected. Aymavilles is a great base for trekking. You can explore vineyard trails, historical routes like Pont d'Ael, or challenging paths to high pastures and the Cogne valley. Its location is convenient, close to both Aosta and the Gran Paradiso National Park.
Saint-Léger Church in Aymavilles is quite isolated. In our experience, it's not always open. We've visited before, even when seeing the Aymavilles Castle, but found it closed. So, plan around its hours. It's open on weekends and weekdays (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday) usually from 2:30 PM to around 5 or 6 PM.
Once inside, the interior surprises with its detailed richness. The frescoes immediately catch your eye. The organ, large for the church's size, adds character.
One noteworthy feature is the bell tower on the church's left. It holds the oldest bells in the entire Aosta Valley. This detail might be missed on a quick visit, but it tells a lot about the place's history.
Next to the entrance, on the right, is the crypt access. It's a smaller, almost hidden space that completes the visit. It adds another historical layer. The Saint-Léger crypt is much older than the church above. It shows the site's long history, used since Roman times and then in the early medieval period.
The visit isn't long, but it's worth a stop, especially if you're nearby for a hike. It's not a "cover photo" destination, but that's why it feels more authentic and less crowded than other valley spots.
