Bari: Stop to Parking Cheats

Bari fights illegal parking with new rules to protect the historic center and enhance the visitor experience.

Bari: Stop to Parking Cheats

What are the new parking rules in Bari?   The Municipality of Bari has introduced a plan to combat illegal parking in the historic center, between the Norman-Swabian Castle and the Cathedral. The new rules include a strengthening of the Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL) with the installation of two access points equipped with cameras. Only vehicles with a valid pass will be allowed entry, while others risk hefty fines.     How can tourists avoid penalties?   Tourists staying in accommodations within the ZTL must request a temporary pass from their hotel or B&B. Without this pass, accessing the restricted area will result in fines. It is essential to inquire in advance to avoid unpleasant surprises during the visit.     What are the benefits for residents?   For residents, the plan provides for 25 reserved parking spaces, ensuring priority access for those with existing ZTL and ZSR D permits. This measure aims to reduce the occupation of public spaces by non-residents, improving the quality of life for locals.     How will pedestrian traffic change?   Certain streets, such as Via Attolini and the area in front of the Cathedral, will become pedestrian-only. This will allow tourists to walk safely, away from moving vehicles. Piazza dell’Odegitria will be protected with bollards, barriers that prevent unauthorized vehicle access, making the area safer and more welcoming.     What measures have been taken for traffic?   To improve traffic flow, a one-way system has been introduced on Via Federico II di Svevia, towards the seafront. This intervention aims to reduce chaos during peak hours and prevent triple parking.     When are the restrictions active?   The restrictions will be active from 6:00 AM until evening. The precise times will be officially communicated with the installation of signage, so it is important to pay attention to avoid fines.     What will happen to the lost parking spaces?   A new multi-storey car park at the port is planned to compensate for the loss of about 150 parking spaces between the Castle and the Cathedral. This project is expected to recover around 450 spaces, available for both residents and visitors, improving accessibility to the area.     What are citizens' concerns?   During a public assembly, some citizens expressed concerns about safety, reporting groups of young people disturbing passersby and illegal parking attendants. Authorities promised to increase controls and install a new pedestrian traffic light near the Pinuccia Modugno kindergarten.     How is mobility evolving in Bari?   Bari is increasingly oriented towards soft mobility and the protection of historical sites. Walking between the Castle and the Cathedral will be easier and more enjoyable, as long as cars are left outside the ZTL.     What are the rules for taxis and rental vehicles?   Taxis and rental vehicles will also have to comply with the new rules. It is advisable for tourists to use public transport or park in authorized facilities outside the center, ensuring a smoother and stress-free experience during their visit.     How will visitor experience improve?   The new measures aim to make the center of Bari more livable, orderly, and safe. With fewer cars on the road, visitors can enjoy a more peaceful and immersive walk through the city's history.
