Cripta del Peccato Originale: Ticket, Opening Hours and How the Visit Works

The visit lasts only 20 minutes, but with the meeting point, transfer and return journey, you should allow around an hour. Here is how access to the Cripta del Peccato Originale really works and what to expect once you arrive.

Cripta del Peccato Originale: Ticket, Opening Hours and How the Visit Works

If you're planning a day in Matera, set aside about an hour for the Crypt of Original Sin. The visit inside lasts about 20 minutes. But remember to allow time for arriving early at the meeting point, transferring to the cave, and returning.

How much time you really need and what to expect

The most common mistake is setting the crypt directly on your GPS. Actually, the visit starts from the ticket office. Once you buy the ticket, you wait for the scheduled time and then go to the site together.

The ticket costs 10 euros. During my visit, there were only a few people, but that was just luck. In high season, it's smart to check availability and book in advance.

To reach the crypt, you drive a short dirt road. You can get there with a regular car; no need for an off-road vehicle. After a few minutes of driving, you find yourself in a countryside area with few buildings and many rock cavities. It feels like you're in the middle of nowhere: no cars, no buildings around.

Near the entrance, you see several caves carved into the valley's side. The Crypt of Original Sin is one of these, and it holds the most important fresco cycle.

The inside is smaller than I imagined from online photos. You can't take pictures, and the visit is mostly in the dark. An audio recording guides visitors while lights highlight different fresco parts.

The frescoes date back to the 8th and 9th centuries. They're attributed to the so-called Painter of Flowers of Matera. The name comes from red floral patterns connecting various decoration parts. On the side wall, there are three niches for the Apostles, the Virgin, and the Archangels. The back wall shows the Creation and Original Sin scenes, which named the crypt.

It's not like a museum with rooms. Here, you're in one rock-carved space, focusing entirely on the paintings.

What struck me most was the setting. Leaving Matera, in minutes, you're in a quiet valley, away from traffic and crowded Sassi. The entrance is a crack in the rock. That's why it stayed hidden for centuries.

The main tip is to arrive on time. If the group has left, you can't just show up and start alone.

If you plan to return to Matera after the visit, spend the rest of the day in the Sassi. I've also written a guide on Matera parking, an article on where to stay in the Sassi, and places for aperitifs with city views.
