Unforgettable activities for a day in Courmayeur

From Turin, where I was for a conference, my wife and I decided to spend a day in Courmayeur. Driving on the highway, the trip takes about an hour and a half. The idea was simple: take a break for a day and see how far we could go without rushing everything.

We left early in the morning because we knew one of the main experiences in the area requires some planning: the ride on the Skyway Monte Bianco. The departure is from Pontal d'Entrèves, just a few minutes from Courmayeur's center, where there are convenient parking spots right near the cable car station, so you don't waste time looking for a spot.

The first stop is Pavillon du Mont Fréty, at about 2,170 meters. We stayed here for a bit, to get used to the altitude and enjoy this intermediate level. It's not just a scenic stop: inside, there's a small museum about the old cable car and the history of the facility, plus some interesting exhibits like wine preservation at high altitude. There are also bars and a restaurant, so it's worth taking your time here instead of rushing up. The view of the Mont Blanc massif does the rest.

Then we continued to Punta Helbronner, over 3,400 meters, the highest point you can reach. Getting up there so quickly is quite something: the landscape changes completely, and you're surrounded by glaciers and peaks. There's a real panoramic area with balconies overlooking the Alps, a very interesting crystal collection, and other places to stop, including a bar. In good weather, you can go out on the suspended walkway, a unique experience but not for everyone, definitely not for me; but just staying on the terraces is enough to realize how unique the place is.

Between climbing, breaks, and returning, this part took hours. It's a really nice and well-organized experience. There are many things to see and understand along the way. It's not just a simple "up and down." But consider the cost: for two, including climbing, descending, and a snack, we spent over 170 euros. It's not cheap, but it's a once-in-a-while experience. The way it's structured justifies the expense. It's best to start early to avoid lines and get better light. Generally, the lifts open around 8:30 AM and close early afternoon (a bit later on weekends). So, don't arrive too late to enjoy it leisurely.

In the afternoon, we decided to slow down. After being up high, relaxing at the Pré-Saint-Didier Spa felt natural. It's just a few minutes by car and offers outdoor hot pools with views of Mont Blanc. Costs aren't low here either: over 100 euros for two to enter. It's not cheap, but after a cold morning, it was worth it for a few hours of relaxation.

Alternatively, you can stay in town and stroll through Courmayeur's center, among shops and cafes. But we needed something more peaceful.

In the evening, we returned to Courmayeur for dinner. I had a clear goal: to taste the lard from Arnad, a local specialty. Valdostan cuisine is quite hearty, and after such a day, it's even more appreciated. Simple, tasty dishes are perfect to end a day outdoors.

Overall, Courmayeur is great for a day visit. You can't see everything, but by choosing a couple of focused experiences, you can still have a full day without rushing around.
