Where is Lake Loie located?

The lake is located in the Aosta Valley, within the Gran Paradiso National Park. It is nestled between the ridges of the Bardoney valley, not far from the village of Lillaz (municipality of Cogne). We are in the southern part of the region, not far from the border with Piedmont.

How do you get to Lake Loie?

You can only reach it on foot. The most direct route starts from the center of Lillaz, famous for the Lillaz Waterfalls, and climbs in a few hours to the body of water. To reach Lillaz, you take the road of the Val di Cogne; it takes about 10 minutes by car from the capital Cogne.

Is it better to do the round trip or the loop of Lake Loie?

There are two options. The direct route allows you to reach the lake in about 2 hours for ~3 km of sustained ascent. The loop trail is more complete: it lasts about 5 hours total, shows different environments, and includes spectacular panoramic sections.

Which trails do you follow?

On the way up, you take trail 13 (or 13L if starting from the Lillaz Waterfalls), which then connects to 13. Higher up, there is the junction 13 / 13G: you leave 13 and continue on 13G towards a more rugged and rocky environment. At a subsequent intersection, you meet trail 12: from here you complete the loop back to Lillaz. Signage is present, but it is useful to have an offline map or GPS track.

What can you see along the route?

At the beginning, there are woods, clearings, and small waterfalls that converge into the valley stream. As you climb, rocky walls, grassy plateaus, and water-carved gullies open up. Along the way, you can admire views of the Cogne valley, the Bardoney Alps, and, in some stretches, snow deposits even in summer.

What are the characteristic points of the itinerary?

You pass through Goilles Dessous, with typical huts at the gates of the Park. You pass by a small dam that marks the entrance to Gran Paradiso. Continuing on 13G, you enter a harsher landscape, with streams carving the rock and waterfalls accompanying the path. A recommended detour leads to the abandoned houses of Bardoney, an area rich in marmot burrows.

What is Lake Loie like?

It is a crystal-clear basin framed by high-altitude meadows and rocky ridges. A perimeter path allows you to walk around it and change your viewpoint. From here, the view of the Cogne Valley and Lillaz is one of the most photogenic moments of the hike.

The route is often classified as E / hiking, but for many it is challenging. The ascents are long, the descents are steep, and they can be slippery after rain. There are no truly exposed sections, but some passages on rocks require sure-footedness.

There are no shelters overlooking the lake. It is advisable to plan a packed lunch and water autonomy; along the route, the only indicated fountain is not always active. Downhill, refreshments and services can be found in Lillaz and Cogne.

In the Gran Paradiso National Park, specific rules apply to pets. It is essential to inform yourself beforehand and respect the regulations (leash, allowed areas), avoiding disturbing wildlife.

When is the best time to go?

From late June to September, the trails are generally clear of snow. In spring and autumn, check for snow cover, bridges, and afternoon thunderstorms. Starting in the morning and returning with daylight is always the best choice.
