The best free parking in Lecce for tourists
Discover the best free parking in Lecce to visit the historic center stress-free.
In Lecce, the best strategy is this: leave your car outside the historic center and walk in.
Trying to drive too close means narrow streets, limited traffic zones (ZTL), traffic lights, and full parking. Especially on weekends and in summer, the time you waste looking for a spot near Piazza Sant'Oronzo isn't worth the few hundred meters you save.
It's much easier to find parking outside the walls and walk to the center in 10-15 minutes. That's how you explore Lecce: once you pass Porta Napoli or Porta San Biagio, you only use your car again when you return to the parking.
If you're coming from Brindisi, you've got an advantage: the SS613 takes you directly to the north side of the city. Before reaching the center, you can exit towards Foro Boario or the station area without hitting heavy traffic. Basically, you find the most convenient parking almost on your way in, without needing to backtrack.
Parcheggio Ex Foro Boario (Piazza Carmelo Bene)
This is probably the most convenient place to park if you're visiting. It's outside the walls, has a huge space, and you can reach Porta Napoli in about 10-15 minutes on foot without going through busy streets.
The real advantage over other areas is its capacity: even in August or during events, finding a spot here is much easier than in the streets around the historic center. For those arriving on a Saturday morning in summer, that's not a minor detail.
In the square, FlixBus, Itabus, and Miccolis stop too. So, during the day, there's always movement--tourists with suitcases, students, people passing through. In the evening, the pace slows, but the area stays lively. There's often a sandwich truck that becomes an informal meeting point for those waiting for a night departure or returning late.
Most parking is blue-striped: pay at meters or via app. It's convenient if you're familiar, less so if it's your first time and you just want to park quickly. The ticket office closes early, so if you're unsure about times, check beforehand.
Lecce Station Parking
It makes sense if you want to be very close to the center.
The parking is open-air and located right in front of the station. From here, you can reach Porta San Biagio in less than ten minutes on foot, and from there, you're directly in the tourist center--restaurants, squares, churches.
The cost is higher than Foro Boario: around 15 euros per day. For one night or a morning, it's okay, but if you stay three days, you'll feel the difference. During peak times, it fills up, but turnover is quite steady because many use it only for central hours.
Hours and Payment
Blue stripes require payment from Monday to Saturday, between 9:00-14:00 and 16:00-21:00. On Sundays and holidays, parking is free throughout the city.
On some weekends and holidays, the city makes university parking free too--Piazza Argento (Principe Umberto) and Via Adua--usually from 18:00 Friday to 3:00 Monday. It's worth checking if your weekend falls on these dates.
