Rueglio and Valchiusella the perfect destination for nature lovers
Rueglio and Valchiusella offer unique experiences for nature lovers.
Where is Rueglio and why is it an ideal destination for nature lovers?
During my stay in Biella, which I chose as a base to explore Piedmont, I decided to explore a lesser-known but authentic valley: Valchiusella. In this tranquil and green valley, among the mountains of Canavese, lies Rueglio, a small village where time seems to flow more slowly.
Rueglio is an ideal place for those seeking experiences in contact with nature, away from mass tourism. From here, various trails and paths lead through woods, streams, and ancient alpine pastures. But my visit was not just for walking: I had heard about a very particular experience called ALPaTREK.
What is ALPaTREK and how does this adventure in Valchiusella begin?
ALPaTREK is a project born from the desire to enhance Valchiusella through the company of alpacas and llamas, gentle, curious, and very sociable animals. The idea is simple yet fascinating: to accompany visitors along the valley's trails with these animals, to discover the beauty of the territory in a slow and respectful way.
Alpacas and llamas are originally from South America, but they have adapted very well to the climate and landscapes of Piedmont. Those who conceived ALPaTREK wanted to create an activity that combines sustainable tourism, environmental education, and animal welfare. Walking alongside these peaceful creatures is a different way to experience the mountains.
Why is Valchiusella a special place in Piedmont?
Valchiusella is a secluded valley located between Ivrea and the mountains that separate Piedmont from the Aosta Valley. Although it is less known than other Piedmontese valleys, it has an authentic and wild charm.
Its chestnut woods, dry stone walls, stone villages, and clear streams tell the story of a living and genuine mountain. Its seclusion is one of the reasons why many visitors are struck by this territory. Here, you can go hiking, picnicking, walking with alpacas, and get to know a part of Piedmont that is still not very touristy.
Who are alpacas and llamas and why are they so loved?
Alpacas and llamas belong to the family of domestic Camelids. These animals, native to the Andes, have been bred for centuries by South American peoples for their wool, for transporting goods, and as cultural symbols.
During the 20th century, they experienced a period of decline, but today they are being rediscovered and valued even in Europe. Their tranquil nature, adaptability, and sweet gaze make them perfect for experiences in contact with the public.
During ALPaTREK, you can walk alongside them, guide them with a light rope, and learn to know them better. Each animal has a different character: some are more curious, others more reserved, but all communicate calm and serenity.
How does an excursion with ALPaTREK take place?
The walks with alpacas and llamas usually start in Rueglio, at the base of the ALPaTREK association. After a brief explanation of the animals' behavior and the rules to follow, you set off for a light trek through trails, woods, and ancient paths.
The experience is suitable for everyone: families, couples, children, and groups of friends. No special training is required, just the desire to walk in nature and enjoy a moment of relaxation. The guides accompany participants along routes that change depending on the season and the duration of the excursion.
Walking alongside an alpaca is a way to slow down, observe the landscape, and smell the scent of the woods. The animals, thanks to their regular pace and soft feet, move with extreme ease even on the most difficult terrains.
What can you discover during a trek with alpacas?
In addition to the company of the animals, the trek with ALPaTREK is an opportunity to discover the history and culture of Valchiusella. The guides share anecdotes about mountain villages, peasant life, and the importance of local biodiversity.
Often, you pass by small alpine pastures, ancient huts, and abandoned mills, witnesses of mountain life from the past. In summer, excursions can conclude with a snack or tasting of typical products, such as cheeses, honey, or mountain herbal teas.
Where to sleep and what to do around Rueglio?
Those who want to stay more than a day can find various sleeping solutions in Valchiusella. There are agritourisms immersed in nature, family-run bed & breakfasts, and small refuges for those who love the mountains.
Among the most appreciated structures are those with views of the mountains or with an in-house restaurant, where you can taste typical Piedmontese dishes such as polenta concia, chestnut gnocchi, and local cheeses.
Nearby, you can also visit the villages of Issiglio, Traversella, and Vico Canavese, each with its own traditions and panoramic trails. Not far away, Lake Meugliano offers a perfect peaceful corner for a relaxing afternoon.
What to do in the evening after a day in Valchiusella?
In the evening, after a trek with the alpacas, it is pleasant to stop at one of the local taverns to enjoy a glass of Canavese wine or a dinner based on local products. In summer, there are often small outdoor events, concerts, or village festivals where you can meet locals.
For those who love tranquility, a walk under the starry sky of the valley is enough to end the day in the most beautiful way. The fresh air, the sounds of the woods, and the feeling of connection with nature make this experience truly unforgettable.
