Rosazza Ferrata a unique adventure in nature

Where is the Rosazza Ferrata and why is it so special?

The Rosazza Ferrata is located in the beautiful Cervo Valley, in the province of Biella, in the heart of the Piedmont Prealps. The route develops in the gorge of the Cervo stream, a natural canyon formed by the millennial action of water on polished granite. It is a unique ferrata because it winds horizontally along the course of the stream, offering a mix of adventure, nature, and spectacular views. During the beautiful season, the crystal-clear pools invite a refreshing bath after the climb.

Where does the Rosazza Ferrata start?

The ferrata begins near the road bridge over the Cervo stream, just before entering the village of Rosazza coming from Campiglia Cervo. Those coming from Biella must ascend the valley towards Campiglia Cervo, cross the main bridge, and park near the monumental cemetery of Rosazza, easily recognizable. From the parking lot, you walk back to the bridge, where a metal ladder on the right bank allows you to descend to the riverbed. After just 5 minutes of walking, you will find the CAI sign with information about the route and a QR code to receive updates and details about the ferrata.

How difficult is the Rosazza Ferrata?

The Rosazza Ferrata is classified as medium difficulty, but it is also perfect for beginners. It develops horizontally, with short and well-equipped vertical sections. The route is divided into two main sections:  1. First section (easy) – short, panoramic, and suitable for those approaching via ferratas for the first time.  2. Second section (more technical) – with slightly overhanging passages and more athletic sections, recommended for those with some experience.  Overall, the difficulties are never excessive, and the ferrata is safe and well-maintained, but it should be tackled with the correct equipment:  * helmet,  * harness,  * via ferrata kit with a shock absorber,  * trekking or approach shoes.

How does the first section of the Rosazza Ferrata develop?

The first part starts immediately with abundant metal grips, making progress easy even for beginners. The route continues horizontally under the road bridge, following the granite wall smoothed by the stream. The context is suggestive: the sound of water, the smooth rock, and the play of light between the walls make this part of the ferrata extremely pleasant.  After a few minutes, you arrive at a short Tibetan bridge suspended over the stream. Crossing it is exciting but safe: it offers a direct view of the gorge and the emerald green water pools. Right after the bridge, you descend to a small pebble beach, where the first section ends. Here you will find an escape route, useful for those who do not want to continue or prefer to stop and enjoy the nature of the stream.

What to expect in the second section of the Rosazza Ferrata?

The second part begins from the riverbank, where a second informational QR code indicates the start of the more technical section. You climb the wall with the help of artificial holds made with stones nailed to the rock and enter a more athletic stretch, with some passages in slight exposure.  The more challenging sections are short but require attention and good management of the carabiners. As you progress, the ferrata climbs the gorge, and the landscape becomes increasingly wild and fascinating, with small waterfalls, smoothed rocks, and a clear stream flowing just a few meters away.  Halfway through the route, there is a point where the ferrata gains altitude until it reaches the back of some buildings near the road. Here there is a second escape route. After this point, you return to descend, facing technical sections and overhanging traverses, but always in safety thanks to the grips and the steel cable.  The route ends near the bridge of the monumental cemetery of Rosazza, where there is a natural pool perfect for a refreshing bath in summer.

How long does it take to complete the Rosazza Ferrata?

The entire itinerary takes about 45-50 minutes in total, including short stops to admire the landscape. The proximity of the parking lot (less than 100 meters from the end of the route) makes the ferrata convenient and accessible.

When to do the Rosazza Ferrata?

Thanks to its modest altitude (about 900 meters above sea level) and favorable exposure, this ferrata can be done in all seasons. In summer, the stream and pools provide refreshment; in spring and autumn, the colors of the forest make the landscape enchanting. Only in case of heavy rains or floods of the stream is it better to postpone the excursion, as some parts may become slippery.
