Parking options for visiting Matera by car

First thing to know: on weekends, blue zones are free. Neither Saturday nor Sunday requires payment. Park downtown, get out, and go--no ticket, no app, no searching for paid parking. If your trip to Matera is on a Saturday or Sunday, this info alone makes your day easier.

If you go during the week, paid parking is the most convenient choice. You can visit Matera in a day, often in half: with 3-4 hours of parking, you spend 3-4€. With Matera's rates, you often waste more time finding free parking than paying for blue zones.

If you're coming from Bari, the train is often the easiest option. Matera Centrale station is about 300-500 meters from the Sassi: in about ten minutes on foot, you're at Piazza Vittorio Veneto, the natural entrance to Sasso Barisano. From the station, just follow Via Roma or Via Don Minzoni.

Via Lucana is your main reference

It runs parallel to the Sassi, and from there you enter the two districts: from the intersection with Via D'Addozio, you enter Sasso Barisano (near the roundabout where Via Rosselli meets Via Lucana), from Via Bruno Buozzi, you go down to Sasso Caveoso (at Via Ridola). Keep it in mind, and the rest follows naturally.

The closest parking to the center

All are just a few minutes' walk from the Sassi. Which one to choose depends mainly on where you want to start your visit.

Convenient for the upper center and Sasso Barisano, but there's something almost no one explains well: the parking also serves residents, who have their boxes and parking spots there.

If you wait in line for a free spot, you might block those just entering or leaving. And not everyone stays calm. If the line isn't moving, don't wait too long: turn around and head to Kennedy.

This is the real plan B when Firrao is full or congested. It's central, easy to reach, and very popular on weekends.

Be careful here: access goes through the ZTL. Before entering, call the parking and get transit authorization, or you'll get fined anyway.

This is probably the most intuitive option: you're already on the city's main avenue, centrally located, and you can easily head down to both Sassi areas.

Convenient if you're coming from the station area or considering visiting Matera without using the car much.

Approximate rates: about 0.70-1€ per hour. Not guarded, not covered, but functional.

If you want to try parking for free on weekdays

Move a few hundred meters away from Via Lucana.

If you want to try parking for free near the Sasso Barisano access, check streets like Via Cererie, Via Santo Stefano, Via Gattini, Via Piave, and Via Stigliani. These areas are slightly further from the immediate center but often help avoid the chaotic traffic near the Sassi.

The easiest areas to try are Via Lanera, Via Castello, Via Vena, and Via Chiancalata. They're slightly further from Via Lucana but often let you find a spot with fewer unnecessary loops.

Keep one thing in mind: some of these streets slope down towards the Sassi. This means you'll have to walk back uphill. It's not dramatic, but after hours among stairs, slopes, and stone, you'll feel it.

Before heading down to the Sassi: consider the elevation

Matera isn't hard to visit, but the elevation is real. The problem isn't going down; it's the final climb back up when you're already tired.

If you're with young kids, elderly people, or have already walked a lot, consider the Linea Sassi shuttle. It runs every 30 minutes from 7:30 AM to 11:30 PM, costs about 1.50€, and you pay directly on board.
