Materdomini, Granchio Rosso, Oktagona: the sea near Brindisi
One free beach and two equipped beach clubs, all reachable by bus from the city centre: where to go and how much to spend
In Brindisi, you don't need to travel far for a beach day. Just 4 km from the historic center, there's the free beach of Materdomini. About 10 km away, you'll find two beach resorts: Lido Granchio Rosso and Oktagona.
In just a few minutes, you can choose from three different experiences. There's a completely free beach, a historic resort, or a newer one. The sea is the same; only the comfort level changes. The sandy seabed slopes gently, perfect for families with young kids.
Materdomini is the free beach. Access is free, but services are minimal, with no facilities for those with mobility issues.
Lido Granchio Rosso and Oktagona are paid resorts. They offer various services, including those for people with disabilities. Plus, staff are available for any needs.
Materdomini, Granchio Rosso, or Oktagona: which one should you choose?
The first beach you find from the center is Materdomini. It's perfect if you want to swim, sunbathe, and spend less.
Continuing along the coast, there's Lido Granchio Rosso. It's a historic spot with affordable prices. Entry starts at about 20 euros for half a day. They have family packages too. The beach has a bar, fitness area, beach volleyball, and more for a pleasant stay.
Next to Granchio Rosso is Oktagona. It offers beach club comfort without driving to Salento. It's designed for a relaxed and comfortable stay for adults and kids. The spaces are well-kept, and there's a restaurant. Prices for an umbrella with two loungers range from 24 to 30 euros, depending on the period and location. The private parking costs only 3 euros for the whole day.
All these beaches are very close to the town center. You can reach them with STP Brindisi city buses. To get to Materdomini, the Porticciolo Turistico, and nearby beach resorts, use Line 5 (Casale-Centro circular), Line 53 (active from May between the Porticciolo Turistico and Le Colonne shopping center), or the summer routes. The city bus ticket costs about 1 euro. From the center, like Corso Roma, it usually takes 15-20 minutes.
But there's something to consider: the Brindisi coast is often windy. Check wind direction and strength before heading out. Materdomini, Lido Granchio Rosso, and Oktagona face an open coast. There are no bays or inlets for protection. On windy days, the sea can get rough and less clear. If you only have half a day, Materdomini is still a great choice. Even if the sea isn't perfect, you can walk to the Punta Riso dam or the Porticciolo Turistico. Stop for lunch or a drink at seaside spots like Estoril or PIC NIC Brindisi Beach Club. I chose this option: sea at Materdomini, coffee at Pic Nic, and a walk to the Porticciolo Turistico.
