Masseria Jesce: history and nature

Masseria Jesce is located along the ancient route of the Appian Way, between Altamura and Matera, in the heart of the Murgia region. The largest room is the master bedroom, with a frescoed vault depicting the god Neptune with a trident, alongside the coat of arms of the de Mari family. The rooms of the old convent are more sober but still retain a strong charm. At the heart of the structure is a semi-hypogeal crypt. Inside, two cycles of frescoes are preserved: the oldest dates back to the first half of the 14th century and is still partially visible. The crypt is one of the most evocative environments, where the bond between faith, art, and silence can be felt. It can be easily reached by car: from Altamura, in about 15 minutes; from Matera, following the SS96 and then the provincial road Jesce, also in about 15 minutes. The area is isolated and lacks services, so it is wise to prepare with water, comfortable shoes, and, if possible, a local guide.
