Infiorate: Magic and Tradition

What is an infiorata?

An infiorata is an artistic composition created directly on the street using flower petals, leaves, seeds, and other natural materials. The designs depict religious motifs, spiritual symbols, or floral decorations, creating a carpet of colors that enchants anyone who walks over it.

Where to see them?

The most famous infiorate in the Capo di Leuca can be found in Patù, Gagliano del Capo, Salve, Alessano, Ugento, Alliste, Felline, and many other small villages. In particular, in Patù, the floral carpet can reach up to 250 meters in length and is visible until late evening.

A community event

What makes this event even more special is the active participation of the community. Local volunteers, both young and old, come together to prepare the designs, gather the flowers, and create the carpets. The work often begins at night, creating a unique atmosphere of sharing.

When does it take place?

The infiorate are prepared in anticipation of the Corpus Domini procession, which usually occurs on a June afternoon. The passage of the Blessed Sacrament over the flower carpets makes this spiritual moment even more evocative.

A dive into faith and art

Many of the sketches used to create the floral carpets are inspired by religious, social, or historical themes. Some depict episodes from the life of Jesus, while others tell stories related to saints or local traditions. The final result is a symbolic journey that connects man to his faith, set against a backdrop of great visual beauty.

Must-see places

Among the most awaited events is the “Night of Flowers” in Salve, a nighttime event with music, lights, and creative workshops designed to engage families and children. In Felline, the young people start preparing the carpets days in advance, turning the infiorata into a true community celebration.

An experience to live

Visiting Salento during the infiorate period is a unique experience. The scents, colors, and passion of the participants make this event unforgettable. It is not just a tradition to watch; it is something to experience.
