How to reach Pila from Aosta by car

Yes, you can drive to Pila. There's a scenic paved road connecting Aosta to Pila ski resort. It's about 18 kilometers away and 1,800 meters high. The route is convenient, beautiful, and open all year, except in bad weather.

I often drive it because I enjoy driving and listening to music. But, honestly, the cable car from Aosta is usually better. Parking in Pila can be tricky, especially on weekends. And if you're in a camper, it's a real issue.

Start from the center of Aosta or the Aosta Est exit on the A5. Take the SR47 towards Pollein-Charvensod-Pila. It's an 18 km road that climbs gently. The road has wide curves and opens up to views of the valley. It takes about 25-30 minutes if there's no traffic. Pass Pollein, then Charvensod. The road stays easy, and the fir trees get denser. After a couple of scenic hairpin turns, you reach Pila's parking at 1,800 meters. The ski slopes are just steps away.

The SR47 is open all year. Snowplows keep it clear in winter. Rockfalls are rare here, unlike in Val d'Ayas. If it rains hard or snows, use chains or winter tires and you're good.

But if you want to avoid weather surprises, park for free in Aosta (Strada Ponte Suaz 4). Then take the cable car up. It's an 18-minute ride that drops you at Pila. You get a view of the shrinking city below. It's cheap, runs every 15 minutes from 8 AM to 9 PM. It saves you from driving on snowy roads. I always recommend it, especially with kids or if you're tired after driving for hours.
