Explore the Castel SantAngelo in Taranto

During my business trips, I often return to Taranto. Each time, I try to visit one of the city's most interesting spots: the Aragonese Castle, also known as Castel Sant'Angelo of Taranto.

It's right at the entrance of the old city, next to the Swing Bridge. The location is spectacular, between the Mar Grande and Mar Piccolo. It's a monument you can't miss: massive, overlooking the water, and full of history.

The first surprise for many visitors is that the visit is completely free. The Italian Navy organizes and guides the tours, managing the complex today. The staff passionately guides groups, clearly explaining the castle's history and its strategic role in defending the city over centuries. What impressed me most wasn't the castle itself, but the pride the military shows when talking about it. You can feel it's more than just a duty for them; it's something they truly cherish.

Visits run from 9 AM to 1 AM. But you must book by phone at 0997753438. Each group can only have a limited number of people. So, it's best to call ahead, especially during busy tourist times.

During the tour, you'll go through bastions, corridors, and panoramic terraces. These spots let you see the navigable canal and ships entering the port up close. This visit also helps you understand Taranto's strategic position in the Mediterranean.

No wonder the Aragonese Castle is one of the top three sites in Puglia. Once you see it, you'll get why. The mix of history, seaside location, and great guided tours makes it really interesting.

One last tip: before or after the visit, take a stroll in the historic center. Less than a hundred meters from the castle, the old city's alleys begin. Here, you can find charming views and taste local specialties in small restaurants and trattorias.
