Discover the perfect choice between farmhouse and historic center
Discover whether it's better to sleep in a farmhouse or in the historic center of Mesagne.
If you have a car--and you probably do, because without it, you won't get far--the farmhouse is the best choice. It's not always the perfect answer, but for most summer stays, it's the ideal solution.
The nearest beaches--Torre Guaceto, Specchiolla, Punta Penna Grossa--all require a car. Torre Guaceto is about 15-20 minutes away, the others a bit further. There aren't really practical alternatives. So, if you're thinking of choosing a downtown apartment to avoid using the car at night, remember you'll still need it every morning to go to the beach.
I stayed at Masseria Elysium. It's a farmhouse with a pool and a convenient location near Apani (north of Brindisi's coast). Having a base like this is very practical: you go out in the morning, return in the afternoon, and if you don't feel like going out, you can relax by the pool. Then, in the evening, you're just a few minutes' drive from the historic center. Unless you park near the station.
You really feel the difference from the center at night. In summer, Mesagne is lively--historic center full, people everywhere, places open. Want to know what it's like at night? Check out Mesagne's nightlife. You won't find the peace of a farmhouse there. But from a farmhouse, you choose: drive a few minutes, reach the center, go out, eat, then return to silence whenever you want.
An apartment makes sense only in certain cases: if you're staying two or three days, don't want to rely on a car at night, and plan to stroll the historic center--Mesagne has corners worth exploring. But if you're staying a week and want to mix beach, evening outings, and some relaxation days--a farmhouse is much better.
If you want a middle ground, consider a house just outside the center: easier parking, quieter evenings, and still just minutes from the historic center.
