The current castle was transformed between 1490 and 1510 by Giorgio di Challant, prior of Sant'Orso. The building was created as a noble residence for his cousin Margherita de La Chambre and her son Filiberto.

The castle has a horseshoe shape. It overlooks a large inner courtyard and an Italian garden surrounded by a high wall, decorated with paintings of heroes and important figures. In the center of the courtyard is the Pomegranate Fountain, made of wrought iron, symbolizing prosperity. The portico on the ground floor is decorated with frescoed lunettes depicting scenes of daily life, such as shops, markets, tailors, and apothecaries.

Vittorio Avondo, a Piedmontese painter born in 1836, purchased the castle in 1872 at a public auction when the building was in decline. Thanks to him, and with the help of Alfredo D'Andrade, an important restoration was initiated that restored the castle to its late 15th-century splendor. Since 2018, part of the castle has been dedicated to an emotional journey about Avondo's life and work, with panels, multimedia elements, and visual suggestions.
