Discover the Church of Santa Maria
Discover the Church of Santa Maria del Casale, an architectural and spiritual gem in Puglia, rich in history and fascinating frescoes.
If you have time before a flight from Brindisi and don't want to stay inside the terminal for hours, there's a unique place you can walk to from the airport. About 600 meters from the boarding area is one of Puglia's most important medieval churches, often overlooked by tourists because it's outside the historic center.
The Church of Santa Maria del Casale is located about 2 km north of Brindisi. It's not in the city center, not along the tourist port, and not within a typical urban area. It's isolated, in a landscape where the countryside has gradually been reached by the airport zone. Car access is limited by a barrier; walking from the airport is the easiest way. It's open from 8 AM to 8 PM.
I visited it while waiting for a flight to Greece.
I arrived at Brindisi airport well in advance. I wanted to park the car near the boarding area and, to avoid wasting time, I got there much earlier than needed. In the waiting room, I had just sat down when I saw the church through the large windows, not far from the terminal.
I still had almost two hours before departure. Enough time to leave the terminal and get a closer look at that tall facade, decorated with geometric designs in white stone and local carparo.
In just a few minutes, I left the airport noise behind. The carts, announcements, and people in line faded away. I found myself in front of a 13th-century medieval monument. Hardly anyone was in front of the church.
The cloister next to it was empty too. You could visit freely, and it was striking to think the airport was just a few hundred meters away.
Inside, the silence was even more intense.
There were no visitors. No worshippers. Just walls, almost entirely covered with frescoes on bare stone. For over two centuries, these frescoes were hidden under layers of lime. They were uncovered only last century.
Maybe that's why the visit stayed with me. Brindisi is often linked to the airport, ferries, or the coastal beaches. But sometimes it surprises you with overlooked places many ignore.
Santa Maria del Casale is one of those places you don't see on a quick tour of the historic center. You have to want to go there, or notice it by chance. Maybe while waiting for a flight, driving along the coast, or looking out the plane window during landing.
And it's this contrast that makes it memorable: one of Puglia's most important medieval churches, silent, next to a busy modern airport.
