Discover the Castle of Oria

What is the history of the Castle of Oria?   The Castle of Oria was built at the behest of Emperor Frederick II of Swabia around 1233. This is no coincidence: Oria, already important in Messapian times, was strategically located between Brindisi and Taranto, making it perfect for controlling the territory. Frederick II, a great lover of culture and architecture, wanted a castle that combined elegance with military function. The structure features three main towers (two square and one polygonal), an inner courtyard, and sturdy walls.     What transformations has it undergone over time?   Over the centuries, the castle has undergone modifications and restorations. During the Angevin and then Aragonese periods, defensive elements were added. More recently, it was transformed into a private residence by local noble families. Today, the appearance of the castle blends medieval elements with Renaissance additions and modern restorations.     Is it possible to visit the interior of the castle?   The Castle of Oria is privately owned. During certain times of the year, especially during cultural events or city festivals, it is opened to the public. However, it is not always accessible regularly like other public castles. We recommend checking with the Oria tourist office or the official website of the municipality before your visit to see if there are special openings.     What can you see from the outside?   Even if it is not open for internal visits every day, the Castle of Oria can be admired from various points in the city. One of the best views is from Piazza Manfredi, the heart of the historic center, from which the silhouette of the castle dominates the rooftops of the village. Walking along the cobbled streets of the center, the castle suddenly appears between arches and staircases, offering postcard-like scenery.     What is around the castle?   The castle is located within the ancient village of Oria, rich in history and atmosphere. Just a few steps away are: The Cathedral Basilica of Oria, with its imposing majolica dome and the mummy crypt, unique in its kind. The Jewish Quarter, one of the oldest in Puglia, with narrow streets and traces of medieval Jewish presence. The Archaeological Museum, located in Palazzo Martini, where you can see artifacts from Messapian civilization. The Montalbano Park, a panoramic viewpoint where you can enjoy a splendid view of the Apulian countryside.     What events take place at the castle?   One of the best times to visit Oria is during the Tournament of the Rioni, held every August. On this occasion, the castle becomes the protagonist of medieval reenactments, costume parades, tournaments, and shows. During these days, it is very likely that the interior will be opened to the public for guided tours.     How to get to the Castle of Oria?   Oria is located in the province of Brindisi, about 35 km from the capital. It is easily reachable by car, by train (on the Brindisi-Taranto line), and by bus from many Apulian locations. The historic center is only accessible on foot: we recommend parking near Via Torre Santa Susanna or Via Epitaffio and then walking up to the castle.     What is the best time to visit?   If you want to fully enjoy the experience, visit Oria at sunset: the golden light illuminates the castle and the historic center, making everything even more enchanting. And if you are a photography enthusiast, don't forget your camera: the views will not disappoint.
