Complete guide to the ZTL in Turin for drivers

What does ZTL mean in Turin and what are its main functions?

ZTL (Limited Traffic Zone) is an area with restricted access during certain hours. In Turin, it helps reduce traffic in the historic center and control emissions. There are two main zones: ZTL Centrale and ZTL Valentino.

Where is the ZTL Centrale and when is it active?

ZTL Centrale covers the heart of the historic center. It's active Monday to Friday, excluding Saturday and Sunday, from 7:30 AM to 10:30 AM. Outside these hours, transit is free.

What subzones exist within the ZTL Centrale?

Within ZTL Centrale, there are three areas with their own rules:

ZTL Area Romana -- closed to traffic and parking every day, holidays included, from 9:00 PM to 7:30 AM the next morning. In Piazza Emanuele Filiberto -- in the heart of the Roman Quadrilateral -- the restriction starts earlier: from 7:30 PM to 7:30 AM. It's one of the liveliest areas of the historic center: nearby are Porta Palatina, Santuario della Consolata, MAO (Museum of Oriental Art), and Piazza Savoia.

Streets Reserved for Public Transport -- closed every day, holidays included, from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Loading and unloading goods is allowed from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM.

Pedestrian ZTL -- closed 24/7, every day without exceptions. Loading and unloading goods is allowed from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM.

How does the Valentino ZTL work?

The Valentino ZTL is inside Parco del Valentino. It's closed to traffic and parking 24/7, including holidays. Loading and unloading are allowed Monday to Friday from 10:30 to 12:00 and 15:00 to 16:30; on non-holiday Saturdays from 10:30 to 12:00.

How is access controlled?

Cameras monitor the entrances and record license plates. If you enter during restricted times without permission, you'll get a fine at home. No points are deducted from your license.

Who can enter the ZTL?

Only those with a permit from the City of Turin or GTT. Permits are linked to your license plate. If you change cars, update your permit to avoid fines.

Can you enter the ZTL to park in a private garage?

Yes. If you have a reservation in a private garage inside the Central ZTL, you can enter during restricted times. Just request an exemption in advance from the garage manager.

How should visitors to Turin by car plan?

The easiest option is to park outside the ZTL and walk or use public transport. If you're staying at a hotel in the historic center, ask if they can register your plate or suggest a partner parking lot.
