Cisternino or Alberobello: Choose

We stayed in Cisternino with a friend. But those five days in Puglia were spent moving around a lot, including Alberobello. This gave us a clear perspective on both places. It wasn't a quick visit, but not a static stay either.

Alberobello is one of those places that impresses you right away. The trulli clustered together create a dramatic effect. Especially the first time, it's hard to compare to anything else. When you arrive, it feels like you're in a place made for photos. The Rione Monti almost looks like a nativity scene. And that's exactly its strength.

The downside is that this concentration draws lots of people. During the day, we saw buses, organized groups, and constant movement. It's one of those places where it's hard to really stop because of the constant flow of people. Eating near the trulli was nice, but often had a touristy feel.

Cisternino is completely different. It doesn't have the immediate "wow" of Alberobello. But it's a town you discover slowly. The historic center is well-kept, white, and orderly. Most importantly, it's still lived in. You really feel the difference at night. The pace changes, and the town seems to return to its residents.

Even when it comes to food, the difference is clear. In Cisternino, we found more traditional quality, especially in butcher shops. You choose the meat, and they cook it for you right there. It's a simple but genuine experience, far from touristy menus.

Driving around, we realized something else: visiting times vary a lot. You can see Alberobello in a few hours. Half a day is enough to explore it calmly. Cisternino, on the other hand, needs less planning. It's better enjoyed slowly, maybe even staying for dinner.

Practically speaking, staying in Cisternino (like we did) was convenient. Prices are generally more affordable, though still high, with less chaos. Its location lets you easily reach both Alberobello and other towns in the Valle d'Itria.

If I have to sum up after five days exploring the area, I'd say this: Alberobello is almost a must-see, but Cisternino is where you truly relax. You visit one, you live the other.
