Challancin and Charvaz between nature and tradition

After sleeping in Morgex, at a cozy B&B surrounded by Valdigne vineyards, I woke up early for trekking. I had a quick breakfast with coffee, fresh bread, and local jam. I packed my backpack with water, snacks, and the map. My wife didn't come because she sprained her ankle. She preferred to rest and wished me good luck with a smile.

I drove a short 3-4 km on mountain roads to Challancin. The air was fresh, and the sun was already high, perfect for a day outside. I parked near the first stone houses, put on my boots, and checked my gear, excited to catch my breath after so long.

After a long break, I decided to start some sports again with a simple but meaningful trek in Valdigne, between the small villages of Challancin and Charvaz. The route started from Challancin, at 1,610 meters, right next to the village church.

It was an easy route, with just a 90-meter elevation change, perfect for restarting after a long break from hiking. The destination was Charvaz, slightly lower at 1,520 meters, among grassy paths and views of snowy peaks.

The walk took 1 hour and 10 minutes each way. Despite the simple path, the winter atmosphere with snow made everything special. Charvaz in winter is only reachable on foot and is sparsely inhabited, giving it a quiet, timeless feel.

Arriving in Charvaz, I found a small village that seemed frozen in time for at least a hundred years. The church and the stone houses made me feel transported to another era.

It was the perfect way to get back on track: an accessible path, immersed in the peace of the winter mountains, reminding me how much I missed this feeling.

Useful Information

Ideal period: Charvaz is best in winter with snow. It turns into a magical, quiet village, only reachable on foot. Without snow (spring/autumn), the path is easier and accessible to everyone.

People presence: It's not completely deserted. You might meet a few locals or shepherds, but solitude dominates.

Atmosphere at destination: Almost total silence, feeling timeless. Stone churches and houses evoke a distant era, a lived-in yet suspended place.

Scenery: The village is the real surprise. Along the trail, enjoy views of Valdigne's snowy peaks. No extreme points, but continuous glimpses.

Suitable for solo? Yes, it's an easy path (1h10 round trip, 90m elevation). Safe for solo walkers, as long as you're equipped.

Extensions: Easily combine with nearby walks in Valdigne. Head towards La Thuile or vineyard circuits for a longer hike.
