Agriturismo Alpe Montuccia a refuge in nature
Agriturismo Alpe Montuccia is a refuge immersed in the nature of Oasi Zegna.
We chose this area of Biella almost by chance. We had a clear idea: we wanted a mountain place cheaper than Valle d'Aosta. Places like Courmayeur or Cervinia are more famous, but also pricier. This doesn't always mean a better experience. Here, costs are lower, and the atmosphere stays authentic. There's less tourist pressure and more space to truly enjoy the mountains.
We arrived at Alpe Montuccia in May after a walk in the Oasi Zegna trails. It was one of those days when you want to stop without rushing. Maybe eat something simple but well-made. This agriturismo turned out to be a great choice.
Just before, we walked through Bosco del Sorriso in Bielmonte, in the heart of Oasi Zegna. It's a loop trail about 4.8 km long starting from Bocchetto Sessera. It's easy, suitable for everyone, and more an experience than just trekking. You walk among firs, beeches, and birches, with forest scents and sounds making it relaxing. At the trail's start, you can see the Eremo di Maria, a small contemplative spot. It's one of those trails that don't tire you out but leave you calm, almost ready to sit at the table.
The setting helps a lot: we're surrounded by greenery, with an open view of the valley. This makes the experience even more enjoyable. The atmosphere is typical of a mountain pasture, without anything built just for show or tourists. It's a genuine place, where you come mainly to feel good and eat.
At the table, we found traditional Piedmontese dishes made with local products. The homemade cured meats and cheeses were some of our favorites. The polenta concia was tasty and well-made, which I personally enjoyed with the wine. You can tell the cooking is directly tied to the area, consistent with tradition.
The service was friendly and helpful. But during busy times, expect some delays. It's not surprising for a place like this. Just keep it in mind if you visit on busy days.
Prices are average for this type of place. Considering the product quality and setting, they are fair.
Alpe Montuccia is easy to reach by car. The last 2 km are on a dirt road, but it's manageable with a regular car.
You can also buy alpine cheeses and cured meats there. It's a nice way to take home something local.
The restaurant service runs from April to the end of October.
Overall, I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a simple agriturismo. It offers typical cuisine and a pleasant natural setting. It's a good example of how the Biella area is often underrated.
