When I talk about Otranto's beaches, Abil Beach always stands out. It's located on the Gradoni beach, along Lungomare Kennedy (about 1.5 km from the historic center). It's a public beach service managed by a cooperative and the Otranto municipality. It's not a traditional private beach. It's a project for people with disabilities and their companions, offering a safe and independent sea experience.
The area is well-equipped: 10 spots with umbrellas and comfortable loungers, ergonomic beach chairs, and pathways for easy sand movement. There are accessible changing rooms and bathrooms, Job chairs, water lifts, and a shower chair. Qualified staff assist throughout the bathing process. It's a calm, family-friendly environment, perfect for those with kids. No crowded beach clubs here, just relaxation under an umbrella, quiet play, and a safe sea.
Access is free (with a symbolic 3 euro fee for booking and maintenance). But since it relies on limited public funds, there are only 10 spots and a limited opening period. So, it's important to book in advance through www.spiagge.it. Availability can run out quickly, so plan ahead.
Some visitors, unaware of the project, expect a year-round beach with free umbrella and lounger rentals like other places. They might be disappointed if there's no availability off-season or if they see only specialized equipment. But Abil Beach isn't for that. It's a flagship for inclusion, with specialized operators making a real difference for those in need. Over the years, it has welcomed thousands from Italy and Europe, showing Otranto's commitment to accessibility.
For me, it's one of the city's best features. It's the only spot in the area focused on inclusion. The sea is accessible to everyone, with no barriers. The staff is used to international tourists.
